Osteoporosis and Related Topics: Factors Affecting Calcium Absorption

Dr. Hansen has multiple active research projects involving osteoporosis and other rheumatic diseases. NIH sponsored research includes 1) a phase III double-blind placebo controlled trial designed to evaluate the benefits of vitamin D therapy among patients with rheumatoid arthritis and hypovitaminosis D, 2) elucidating the genetics of antiphospholipid antibody syndrome, and 3) clarifying the risk-benefit ratio of heparin use, including the association between heparin antibodies and thrombotic events, during open-heart surgery.

Other ongoing studies include the ideal method by which to analyze lumbar spine bone mass in men as a means of predicting future fragility fracture (MrOS sub study #29), the affect of vitamin D repletion upon intestinal calcium absorption and skeletal calcium accretion among postmenopausal women with vitamin D insufficiency (CReFF grant, GCRC), and patient factors associated with adherence to alendronate therapy among male veterans.

Recent research efforts involving University of Wisconsin trainees include the following: 1) outcomes among 45 patients with statin associated myopathy (published), 2) a patient with vision loss from Wegener�s Granulomatosis (published) and 3) measurement of vitamin D in physicians and subsequent influence on patient care (manuscript in preparation).
