Movement Coordination and Variability of Older Adults

Maintaining independent mobility in older adults is of primary concern to health care providers. Our research has focused on understanding movement coordination changes as a result of aging, with specific interest in the role of coordination variability.

Through the use of experimental motion capture and computer simulation and modeling, we are able to quantify the biomechanical and functional aspects of movement in adults. Included in our studies are comparisons between healthy young and older adults, as well as those with mobility impairments. This information allows us to better understand the progression of functional limitations in adults and the accompanying coordination compensations. The long-term objective of our research is to improve the current techniques used to identify limiting factors of gait performance, so as to improve the development of scientifically based interventions for elderly adults with gait impairments.

A current study involves determine the ability of stride duration variability and trunk acceleration variability to accurately identify and detect change in falls risk status in older adults. This information will provide insight into extending these measures into clinic practice to aid in objectively determining falls risk. Additionally, these measures will provide a scientific basis for testing current and new falls prevention programs.
