The most frequent causes of loss of vision in older Americans are cataracts, macular degeneration and glaucoma. Although there are medical treatments for these conditions, they are costly, inconvenient, and in some cases of limited benefit. Therefore, prevention is the most appropriate aim of medical research. It is, therefore, necessary to determine what factors are associated with the risk of these conditions. A longitudinal population-based study, the Beaver Dam Eye Study, is currently being conducted in an effort to shed light on some of these factors. At the five-year follow-up, the Epidemiology of Hearing Loss Study was begun in conjunction with the Eye Study. Together, the Eye Study and the Hearing Study give a fuller description of the burden of multiple sensory disabilities that accompany aging.
A common complication of diabetes is diabetic retinopathy. It is a significant cause of visual loss in American adults. Although the underlying disease, diabetes, may be thought of as the direct cause of retinopathy, there are other personal characteristics that may influence its development and progression. The focus of epidemiologic research in this disease centers on defining the frequency of this complication in persons with younger-onset diabetes (sometimes called juvenile-onset) and persons with older age at onset of diabetes (some of these patients take insulin, some not). In addition, delineating those factors which seem to predispose to the earlier development and progression of diabetic retinopathy are important aims of the research.
Risk factors for many age-related disorders have been identified but in many cases the strongest risk factor is having a family member with the same condition. Because of the large number of families participating in the Beaver Dam Eye Study we have been able to confirm that family aggregation occurs for all the age related eye disease we have studied. A genome wide scan has been done to locate regions of interest and a fine mapping grant has been awarded funding in order to attempt to identify actual genes responsible for these conditions.
